Narayanan Parthasarathy, VA SEE Enrollee

Since 2014, Narayanan Parthasarathy has been an enrollee with NEW Solutions and works in the Product Science Branch (PSB) of the Office of Pesticide Programs (OPP) at the Environmental Protection Agency. PSB evaluates scientific data on antimicrobial pesticide products, including chemistry, toxicity, and efficacy. For Narayanan’s part, he conducts both product chemistry and acute toxicology reviews for registration of the antimicrobial pesticide products. Specifically, Narayanan analyses and interprets submitted data on pesticide chemical formulations and acute toxicity and prepares written scientific reviews to the regulatory staff. Narayanan also advises regulatory staff and managers on various scientific subjects as they communicate with industry and stakeholders.

Narayanan received his PhD in Chemistry from the University of Madras, India.  He completed his postdoc at Harvard Medical School in Boston.  He brings a wealth of academia and research knowledge to the Antimicrobial Division at Potomac Yard, Crystal City, Virginia.  Narayanan became an Assistant Professor at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Winston-Salem, North Carolina and The University of Connecticut Health Center Farmington, Connecticut. His focus of research had been on structure-function interrelationships of carbohydrates in diabetes, cancer, atherosclerosis, and bacterial infections. Prior to joining EPA, he was involved in a research in the development of a high-throughput screening method (carbohydrate microarray technology) for the serodiagnosis of bacterial infections. The research was carried out in the capacity of a Chemist at the Bacteriology Division, United States Army Research Institute of Infectious Diseases, Fort Detrick, Maryland. He had published manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals, presented his findings at international meetings, and was awarded grants to support his research.

His monitor says how brilliant the NEW SolutionsS are in CTT (Chemistry and Toxicology Team of the Antimicrobials Division).  Narayanan is surely positive proof of that statement.  From the day he arrived, Dr. P (as he is affectionately known) set out to serve the Agency diligently and with great intelligence and assimilation.  He was hired to conduct Product Chemistry reviews.  However, not only does he perform that task meticulously well; he has also volunteered to do so much more. When time prevails, Dr. P. conducts research to keep the Division abreast of new and innovative scientific developments within his discipline. He assists the regulatory teams by providing a plethora of complex and expeditious reviews that may have a short turn-around period and quite often, he volunteers to complete special team projects. His dedication and unwavering commitment to protection of the environment and public health should not go without notice. The Antimicrobials Division is extremely grateful and so much more superior as a division with Dr. Narayanan Parthasarathy as a member.

Narayanan enjoys cooking vegetarian dishes and sharing his food with his coworkers, with whom he also shares his many jokes.
